Neil Becker VIEW PROFILE

Neil W. Becker, beloved father, brother, friend, and long-time Durham resident, died peacefully surrounded by loved ones on September 11, 2024. He is survived by his daughter Maggie Becker and her partner Angel of Austin, TX, his brothers Richard Becker of San Francisco, Brian Becker of Washington D.C., and Chris Becker of Rochester, NY, and his sister Jill Becker of Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Neil was passionate about helping people. As a highly-skilled mechanic, he serviced the community for more than thirty years at Becker Automotive on Hillsborough Road, a small business of his own making, where he kept both people and their cars well-cared for with great compassion and proficiency.

He was an avid gardener and cook, and was always keen to share his homemade goods with anyone and everyone. For many years, he delighted regulars and passersby alike at Sam's Quik Shop with his famous salsa, smoked tuna bellies, and blue cheese dressing. He often spent weekends driving around to various small businesses and friends houses to deliver his homemade goods.

Neil was possessed of an uncommon kindness and generosity. He spent his life in service to others. He was steadfast, loyal, and eternally loving.

The family invites the Durham community to join them in a celebration of life on Sunday, September 29th at 4pm at Bull McCabe's. Neil's final wish was to bring people together to share in the joy of good beer, good food, and especially, the good company of friends.

Such sad news.  Neil lived around the corner from me and so I knew him since elementary school.  He was always a great guy and I'm sorry he lived so far away.  I've enjoyed getting to know his younger brother, Chris, who lives in Rochester. Seeing him reminds me of Neil and our childhood together.

Im sorry to hear of Neil's passing. I didn't know him well, but remember him as a quiet, funny and good man. It sounded like he lived a life in full, and I guess we all know that the more time passes, the more precious each day becomes. My condolences to his family.
